English Language Development Through Science
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The “Like a Scientist” professional learning series expands participants’ understanding of how to enhance elementary students’ English language development through focused engagement in inquiry science. Traditionally, schools have considered science learning and language learning to be very different subjects. However, recent research suggests that the integration of these seemingly disparate areas is advantageous to both. The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) provide opportunities for students to use English in meaningful ways. The student-to-student interactions that take place during inquiry-based science not only support science learning, but also lead to multi-layered development of content rich, academic language. During four synchronous content sessions participants will deepen their application of how to scaffold students’ English language development as they share their observations of naturally occurring phenomena, use evidence to support their claims, communicate new science perspectives, and record their ideas in science notebooks. In the asynchronous course component, participants will build their capacity to design English-language scaffolded science curriculum and support site and district integration of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) with ELD standards.
